The portrait commission process can be very intimidating and finding the right artist to work with can also be a challenge. That is why I explain the whole process the style of my work, and what you should expect when you commission me. There is no mystery here. I am happy to make mockups for you, showing you the size and cropping based on your photos and pricing. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have.

ABOUT MY PAINTING TECHNIQUE

I use a traditional oil painting technique called “alla prima” which captures the sense of spontaneity of the oil painting process. Simply, it means that the brushwork and the process of painting are evident in the finished product. It looks like a painting because you can see the paint and brushstrokes

I paint on gesso primed archival panels, using time-honored materials and techniques. I don’t use photomechanical techniques to create something that looks like a painting. I draw and paint from the photo resource, which is a refined skill that takes decades to develop and is slow to produce the finished work. What you receive is a product that is produced in the same manner as portraits that you would find in a museum, thus having lasting value.

WHICH PHOTOS CAN WORK?

I can work from all types of photos, including selfies and family photos. Photos need to be at least well lit and clear enough to see small facial features. If you aren’t sure, just send it to me, and I will let you know.

DETERMINING THE SIZE

I generally work at life-size, please see the size-scale image if you are interested in a traditional portrait. If you are interested in a portrait that is more scenic, a group portrait, or involves more complexity, please contact me so that I can review with you the reference photos and create mock-ups with size and price options.

COMMUNICATION AND FILE SHARING

I would like to use the communication tool, app or mode that you are most comfortable with. That may be email, one of the many conferencing apps, or social media platform direct message functions. You can contact me initially through my contact page, but after that, it is up to you. I don’t want to miss your communications, and I will make sure I don’t miss yours. And if you would like to kick things off with a phone call, or conference call, that is fine too. Whatever makes it the easiest for you.

Most of these options have the ability to share files without loss of file size or quality. If not there are many alternatives to do so easily.

DELIVERY TIME

You are my most important client, but I work on a first come first serve basis. Once I receive a commission payment, then you are placed into the schedule. I will let you know what that lead time is in advance of payment. Once I start on your portrait, then it takes about a month until delivery.

If you need the portrait done sooner than my current schedule dictates, please let me know, and I will see if I can accommodate you sooner. I can’t perform miracles, but I can shift things around. As I said, you are my most important client.

What if unforeseen circumstances prevent me from delivering on time? You will be the first to know, and I will make sure your needs are met.

FRAMING SERVICE

If you would like to have your portrait framed and ready to hang, please let me know. I have a wide-range of styles to choose from. I would be happy to give you a quote for the size of you portrait.
